Ward 2 Council Member
Mike Birdsong was elected to Choctaw Ward 2 City Council in April 2017. Mike is married to long time Choctaw resident Bonita Davidson Birdsong. Mike, having lived in the Choctaw area for 14 years, and Bonita’s family for 65 plus years, Mike wanted to serve the community.
Mike’s goals while serving Ward 2 and Choctaw is to:
1.Enhance recreational and open space opportunities in Choctaw to create a healthy and vibrant community;
2.Ensure that Choctaw is a special place to live for people of all ages;
3.Continue to build the infrastructure to match existing and anticipated need;
4.Encourage Choctaw residents to participate in their local government.
Mike retired from the federal government in 2012. Mike was the National IRS Federal Program Director and Emergency Response Coordinator where he led a program that was the primary liaison between IRS and other federal agencies such as FEMA, Treasury, the White House and Homeland Security.
He was called upon by the White House and Treasury to participate in the National Response Framework and the National Level Exercise. This effort presents the guiding principles that enable all disaster response partners to prepare for and provide a unified national response to disasters and emergencies.
Mike is currently President of the Oklahoma Genealogical Society (OGS). OGS has over 600 members and a board of twenty community volunteers. OGS is a non-profit organization formed in 1955. OGS main missions are to collect and preserve data and to assist people with their genealogical research and writing.
Mike is also Treasurer/Legislative Liaison for the Eastern Oklahoma County National Active and Retired Federal Employees Association. Mike previously officiated high school and college football where he was head referee for two Oklahoma High School State Championship games.
He is a native of Duncan, Oklahoma and graduated from the University of Oklahoma.
Mike and Bonita have three children and eight grandchildren. They spend their time volunteering, traveling, chasing grandchildren and enjoying Choctaw and all it offers.
